What Enfield Town Collection Will and Will Not Take

Enfield's rules are unusually specific — a weight threshold, a per-load price and a hard ban on demolition material. Knowing them tells you when you need a container.

One barrel a week

We are a dumpster company, so this may be an odd thing to lead with: for a lot of household jobs in Enfield you should not rent a container at all. But the Town's limits are specific, and knowing exactly where they sit tells you when you genuinely do.

Start with the basics. Curbside trash is collected once a week on a four-day schedule, Monday through Thursday. Recycling is biweekly. The Town will not collect trash unless it is in an approved gray tipper barrel.

Trash and recyclables collected in Enfield are transported to the Babylon Recycling Center over in Suffield.

The extra barrel tags cost $200

This is where the pressure comes from on a big clear-out.

You may buy a maximum of two additional tags per year. For the tag year running 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027, the cost is $200 per tag.

So extra weekly capacity is expensive and it is capped. Two tags is the ceiling — there is no option to simply put out more barrels because you are mid-project.

One useful exception: for the pickup immediately following six holidays — New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas — the Town collects additional barrels without tags. If your clear-out has any flexibility, timing it into one of those weeks is free capacity.

Bulky waste: 60 lbs, 5 feet, $150 a load

The headline rule, and the number a container has to beat.

That is a fair and clearly priced service, and for one or two large items it is the right tool. A sofa, a mattress, an old dresser: book the appointment, put it out, done.

Where the arithmetic changes is volume. Three truck loads is $450, on the Town's appointment schedule, with you sorting and hauling everything to the curb. A container costs about the same or less, holds far more, and sits on your driveway for the duration.

How to stack it so it gets collected

The placement rules are specific and crews do enforce them.

• Items must be curbside the night before your pickup date
• They must be separated into piles: wood (tied and bundled, no longer than 6 feet), furniture, metal, and appliances
• Do not place items underneath overhead obstructions

The four separate piles is the part people miss. It is not fussiness — those streams go to different places, and a mixed heap is what gets left behind.

The demolition ban and the building permit

The hardest line the Town draws, and the one that defines this trade locally.

Two things follow. First, renovation debris has no curbside route at all, at any price, in any quantity. Second, if the disposal route is the Town, the paperwork has to be in order in advance, which means the building permit needs pulling before demolition starts.

The Town itself names the alternative: a private waste company. That is the route most contractors take here, because it needs no appointment, no permit to carry and no per-load fee.

What the Town will not take at all

Beyond demolition material, the excluded list is long and worth reading against your actual job:

• Household hazardous waste of any kind
• Asbestos
• Shingles
• Sheet rock
• Concrete
• Windows with glass, mirrors, and tables with glass
• Paint of any kind — the Town points residents to Sherwin Williams or Carr Hardware
• Car and truck parts, oil and batteries — oil and batteries go back to the auto parts store where they were purchased

Worth being clear: we can take everything on that list except the asbestos and the paint. The exclusion is the Town's, not a property of the material.

The transfer station and its permit

The Town's transfer station is on Town Farm Road and handles recycling, bulky waste and yard waste.

Hours: Tuesday to Friday 8:00am to 2:30pm, Saturday 8:00am to 3:30pm. Closed on holidays — and in the event of a Monday holiday it is closed on Tuesday.

The permit: a sticker, purchased at the station itself. To buy one you need a vehicle registration showing Enfield residency. With a valid permit, yard waste may be brought and disposed of without additional fees.

Free with no permit at all: scrap metal, cardboard, televisions, microwaves and electronics. Electronics — TVs, computers, monitors, printers, microwaves — are free to residents with proof of residency.

Questions about commercial permits, borrowed vehicles or temporary permits should go to the Refuse and Resource Management Division rather than being settled at the gate.

Christmas trees are taken at the station at no charge, or collected curbside on the published January date — at the curb by 6am, no artificial trees, free of tinsel, ornaments and stands, and not in plastic bags.

When a container is the right answer

• Any renovation or remodelling project. Demolition material cannot go in any tipper, full stop.
• Sheet rock, shingles, concrete, windows or mirrors coming out — all named exclusions.
• More than two or three bulky truck loads, where $150 each stops being the cheaper option.
• More than one barrel a week of ordinary waste, where tags cost $200 and cap at two.
• A whole-house, basement or attic clear-out you want finished in a week rather than staged across months of appointments.
• Anything a contractor generated — that debris is theirs, and the Town requires the building permit or a private hauler.
• Business, rental or commercial property.
• Any address outside Enfield — and especially over the Massachusetts line, where none of the above applies and the transfer station permit is not available to you at all.
